DESCRIPTION
영화 <물물교환>은 공정한 가치교환을 표방하지만 거대 시스템에 의해 통제되고 있는 자본주의 시장경제의 단면을 그 시스템의 한 쪽 구석에서 부산물을 통해 연명하는 구성원들을 통해 그린다. 돈을 받는 대가로 공사장을 지키는 여자는 흉물스러운 건물을 등에 지고 있지만 그로부터 보호받지 못한다. 오히려 감시 당하는 듯 불안하게 주위를 두리번거리고 손에 쥔 쇠파이프는 그녀의 단속 대상인 할머니가 쥐어주는 귤보다도 영향력이 없다. 모든 상황을 지켜보는 실체가 불분명한 눈은, 또 다른 일거리를 빌미로 그녀를 착취하며 부당한 물물교환의 사슬 안에 묶어두는 시스템인 동시에 문득문득 그 시선과 동화되는 것을 섬뜩해 하는 우리 자신이기도 하다. 영화는 시스템에 대한 비판이자 그것이 주는 작은 안위에 달콤해하며 그것을 강화하고 있는 구성원들에 대한 암울한 초상이다. Fair Trade provides a look at the capitalistic market economy through the people who survive on by-product at a corner of the system. The woman who watches the construction site for money stands in front of the humongous building, which doesn’t protect her at all. Rather, she stares around with anxiety as if she is watched. The iron pipe she’s holding is no more influential than a mandarin given by the granny she’s supposed to watch. The unidentified gaze symbolizes the system that keeps her in its unfair circle in exchange for ongoing occupation, as well as the viewers who creepily identify themselves with it. The film is a criticism on the system, and at the same time, a gloomy portrait of its members who consolidate the system for its sweet little lies. (Suan SEOL)

JO Seyoung Jo Seyoung is MFA in film at the Graduate School of Advanced Imaging Science, Multimedia and Film, Chung-ang University. She worked as assistant director of documentary <Words Kept In Stone> and directed documentary <Made in Korea: International Adoptions>, <Variety Survival Talkshow> and <Let's Dance>. <Let's Dance> was awarded the White Goose Award (Grand Prize), International Competition at the 5th DMZ Korean International Documentary Film Festival. |
