Oslo Visions is a program of short film and video works co-curated by the Seoul based curator SeiheeShon and Oslo based artist-curator FarhadKalantary. It is intended to represent the foremost group of artists working with short single-screen film and video in Oslo. The program does not carry a thematic agenda. It portrays the diversity of works produced in Oslo and the variety of concerns that shape the Oslo art scene. It also introduces more contemporary moving image works produced since 2000 which the other Norway focus program – ‘The Highlights – Retrospective: Film & Video Art in Norway, 1960-90”– does not cover. We began working on this program with the idea of presenting a selection of works from across Norway. But we soon realized that the artists we were interested in were all based in the capital. To avoid giving the program an untrue claim of having a nationwide scope we agreed to be truthful to the fact that this collection is from a single city. Working as two individual curators on this program also meant that we had to reach a compromise on the selection of works. Instead of working on a theme that would bind the works together, we agreed to find works around 10 minutes long and decide the screening order according to their forms and contents.  We called the program Oslo Visions to stress the fact that the program does not follow a specific idea but rather aims at presenting the richness of tendencies to be found in the art scene of this one city. In that sense we have not imposed an idea onto the program. Instead we have opened our minds to discover the ideas flowing from a place- a city embedded in its art works. From such a point of departure we can bring a place under scrutiny, spotlight ideas that are specific to that place and allow them to re-formulate. Oslo Visions presents the concerns, issues and dilemmas pertaining to the city. We chose a group of key artists in the city and gathered their works in a single program. As we made the collection and viewed them as an assembly of works we realized that they have more in common than we had initially anticipated. We had employed a free approach to our programming and perhaps it is in the light of such an approach that we have reached something unexpected. What these art works reveal and offer us is nothing other than a reflection of the psyche of the city. This is a portrait that could not be more truthful because it was made without any such intention. Oslo Visions presents a multiplicity of truths about the artistic sensibilities of Oslo. Among them, and the most uninterrupted truth of the program, which gushes like a fountain of emotions from Oslo Visions is the uneasiness within the city. Oslo is a city of anxieties.
