PROGAM NOTE

전소정은 예술가로 불리지는 않지만 일상과 예술의 경계에 서 있는 이들의 삶을 통해 예술의 해결되지 않는 문제들, 이상과 현실의 차이, 예술가의 태도에 대한 고민들을 이야기한다. 정답이 있는 것도 아니고 어쩌면 평생을 두고 풀어야 하는 과제들인 만큼 이러한 일련의 비디오 작업들은 작가가 스스로 답을 찾아가는 과정일 것이다.

작가는 이러한 작업을 하게 된 계기를 핀란드에서 알게 된 한 무용수에서 찾는다. 숲 속에서 혼자 살았던 그가 정말 무용수였는지는 알 수 없지만 그의 춤을 기억하는 누군가에게 그는 예술가로 남아있다. <열두 개의 방>은 피아노 조율사가 장인으로서 꿈꾸는 이상을 은유적으로 보여주는데 마치 그의 꿈속에 들어갔다 온 것 같은 느낌이다.  (손세희) 

Jun Sojung explores unsolved issues in art, the gap between ideal and real, as well as an artist’s attitude towards art, by hearing from people who work on the border between art and day-to-day living. As much as these subjects could be the task of a lifetime and there is no one correct answer, a series of her recent videos on these themes may be a way for the artist to arrive at the best answers for herself.

As a starting point for this series, Jun tells of a man she happened to know of who lived alone in the woods in Finland. To someone still remembering him dancing, he remains “a dancer” even though that may never have been his profession at all. The Twelve Rooms illustrates metaphorically the idealistic dreams of a piano tuner as an experienced technician. After watching the film, I felt as if I had dipped into his dream. 주변에서 마주하게 되는 개인들의 삶의 이야기를 연극적 무대와 퍼포먼스, 고전 텍스트를 차용한 내러티브 등을 통해 구현해내면서 사회의 변화 속에서 개인들의 삶에 펼쳐진 다양한 틈과 의미들에 주목하고 있다.

2015년 두산갤러리에서 열린 개인전 <폐허>를 포함, <예술하는 습관>(갤러리 잔다리, 2012), <심경의 변화>(인사미술공간, 2010) 등의 개인전과 <What We See>(국립 오사카미술관, 2013), <아트스펙트럼>(삼성미술관 리움, 2012) 등 다양한 단체전을 통해 영상, 설치 등의 작품을 선보이고 있다. 

 
 
 

JUN Sojung

Looking at various meanings and gaps in individuals’ lives which are affected by social changes, JUN Sojung represents life stories of people around her, employing theatrical stage, performance and traditional literature.

She recently exhibited in solo shows Ruins at Doosan Gallery (Seoul, 2015), The Habit of Art at Gallery Zandari (Seoul, 2012), and As you like it at Insa Art Space (Seoul, 2010). Her videos and installations have been part of group shows including What We See at Osaka National Museum of Art (Japan, 2013) and Art Spectrum at Samsung Museum Leeum (Seoul, 2012).
