PROGRAM NOTE

시리 헤르만센은 경제적, 환경적, 문화적 대변동으로 몰락한 사회가 이 현대적 재앙에 어떻게 적응하고 어떤 생존전략을 갖고 있는지에 대해 탐구한다. <자유의 땅 (디트로이트)>는 성공한 자동차산업의 상징이었다가 파산한 도시 디트로이트에서, 거대 산업자본의 논리에 저항하며 스스로 새로운 삶의 방식을 개척하는 예술가 농부들의 이야기를 담는다.

백인 예술가 케이티와 에밀리는 아프리카계 미국인들이 정착했던 지역에 들어가 자신들의 생존을 위해 또 지역사회를 가난으로부터 구제하기 위한 제안으로 도시농사와 지역 내 교환경제를 시도한다. 그러나 자립자족을 위해 처음 해보는 토끼 도축, 흑인노예시절을 연상케 해 농사 자체에 대해 부정적인 아프리카인 지역공동체의 인식 등 갈 길은 멀어 보인다. 그들은 과연 종국에는 자유의 춤을 출 수 있게 될까? (손세희)

Siri Hermansen visits places devastated by a huge change in the economy, environment or politics and investigates how people adapt to the effects of the catastrophe. Land of Freedom (Detroit) tells the story of a group of artist-farmers who are against industrial capital and attempt a new way of life in Detroit, the city which was once a symbol of the mighty car industry and is now bankrupt.

White artists KT and Emily settled down in a former African-American district and developed urban farming and a local exchange economy to sustain themselves and help their poor neighbours. However, the scenes of slaughtering rabbits for food and telling about the African-American community’s negative perception of farming, which they immediately associate with the time of slavery, suggest there is still a long way to go. Can they all finally enjoy a dance of freedom? (Seihee SHON)

시리 헤르만센

현재 오슬로 국립예술아카데미 박사 과정 중에 있다. 시리 헤르만센은 비디오, 사진, 설치 작업을 하며 사회적, 생태학적, 정치적으로 변화를 겪은 곳들에서의 적응과 생존전략들에 대해 주목한다. 최근 2014년 아트스테이션 재단 5050, 제19회 시드니 비엔날레, 다시 본1814 – 과거는 여전하다 (노르웨이), 서바이벌 키트 페스티벌(우메아), 2013년 베닌 비엔날레, 프로아티버스 재단(핀란드), 실버렌즈 갤러리(싱가포르)에서 전시했다.

Siri HERMANSEN

Siri Hermansen is currently completing her doctorate at the National Academy of the arts in Oslo. Hermansen works with video, photography and installations focusing on adoption and survival strategies in places that undergo deep social, ecological and political change.

Hermansen recently exhibited at Art Stations Foundation 5050, the 19^th Bienniale of Sydney, 1814 revisited – The past is still (Norway) and Survival Kit Festival in Umeå in 2014. In 2013 she took part in group exhibitions including the Benin Biennale, Careof Gallery (Italia), Proartibus Foundation (Finland) and Silverlens Gallery (Singapore).
