PROGRAM NOTE

엘레나 나사넨의 영화에는 주로 대화나 말이 없고 특별한 사건이 일어나지도 않는다. 어떤 일이 막 일어난 것 같은, 혹은 일어날 것 같은 ‘분위기’만 존재한다. 사운드는 이러한 분위기와 내러티브를 만들어낸다. 작가는 자신의 영화에서는 자주 “감정에 직접적으로 영향”을 미치는 사운드가 이미지보다도 더 중요하다고 했다.

<황무지>에서 들판에 모인 다섯 여자들은 어딘가를 향하고 마침내 그곳에 침입한다. 그들이 무엇을 찾고자 하는지, 어떻게 그곳에 모이게 됐는지 설명은 없다. 관람자들은 궁금증을 잔뜩 품은 채 반복되는 영화를 다시 보게 되고 카메라 프레임 밖의 이야기들은 관객들의 상상에 맡겨진다. (손세희) 

In Elena Näsänen’s films there is often no dialogue, nor any distinct event; there is only ‘mood’ and a sense that something has just happened or is about to happen. It is sounds that create this atmosphere and narrative. The artist has said that the soundtrack is more important than the images in her films as it directly affects the viewers’ emotions.

In Wasteland, five women gather in a field and walk together until they reach an industrial site where they break in. The film does not explain what they are looking for nor how and why they all met. Inquisitive viewers will see the film constantly looping. The untold story beyond the camera frame is left to the imagination. (Seihee SHON)  

 

엘레나 나사넨

헬싱키 순수미술 아카데미에서 공부했다. 엘레나 나사넨의 작품은 주로 어떤 장면이나 한 순간에 초점을 맞추므로 그 이전 혹은 이후에 어떤 일이 일어났는지를 유추하고 상상하는 것은 관람자들의 몫이다. 작품은 구조 중심이던 데서 최근, 배우들과 함께 작업하며 스토리텔링이 있는 영화 내러티브 중심으로 변화를 시도하였다. 2014년 프랑크푸르트미술협회, <건너편의 시선>(숙명여대 문신미술관, 서울), 2013년 핀란드 포리 미술관 등 다수의 국내외 단체전 및 영화/비디오 페스티벌에 참여했다.  

 
 
 
 

 

 Elena NÄSÄNEN

Elena Näsänen studied at Academy of Fine Arts of Helsinki. Her film and video work often focuses on either a sequence or a single moment and the viewer is invited to guess and imagine what has happened before or what will happen after. Recently her work has evolved from the structural to the cinematic narrative storytelling and working with actors.

Her works have shown in numerous exhibitions and festivals such as Frankfurter Kunstverein (Germany, 2014), A view from the Other Side (Sookmyung Women’s University Moonshin Museum, Seoul, 2014).Pori Art Museum (Finland, 2013), and Rencontres Internationales (Berlin, Madrid, Paris 2009-08).
