ARTIST'S NOTE

한 남자가 땅에 발을 딛지 않은 채 의자 위에 앉아있다. 그의 옆에는 같은 모양의 의자가 놓여있다. 남자는 의자를 들어 그의 행선지 방향에 놓는다. 앉아있던 의자와 옮겨진 의자의 거리는 땅에 발을 딛지 않고 이동할 수 있을 만큼의 거리이다. 의자 사이를 넘어간다. 곧 의자를 옮긴다. 이 행위를 반복하며 앞으로 나아간다.

두 개의 의자만을 이용하여 작가의 생활공간-슈투트가르트에서 전시공간-베를린까지를 이동하는 퍼포먼스를 기록한 영상이다. 지면과의 직접적인 신체적 접촉을 배제한 이동과정은 여정이 내포한 실제적인 시간과 정서적 거리를 가시화시킨다.

본 영상은 베를린에 위치해 있는 한국대사관 소속 갤러리에 전시되었다. 전시장으로 향하는 계단을 오르기 위해 두 개의 다리를 자르고 계단 위에서 다른 다리 두 개를 마저 제거하였다. 협의를 통해 전시장 내부에서 다리가 잘린 의자의 위치를 잡고 마침내 의자에서 내려왔다. 위치가 정해진 의자는 전시가 종료되기 전까지 이동되지 않았다. 의자 위에 그것의 무게를 지탱할 수 있는 크기의 모니터가 설치되었고, 잘린 여덟 개의 다리와 톱밥, 디스플레이를 진행하면서 발생한 부산물들은 모니터 뒤에 가려지게 설치되었다.

A man is sitting on a chair without touching the ground. There is another identical chair beside him. He picks up the chair and places it in the direction of his destination. The distance between the chair on which he was sitting and the shifted chair is enough for him to move between the two without stepping on the ground. The man steps onto the second chair and immediately brings the first one in front. He repeats this action as he moves forward.



This video is documentation of a performance in which the artist transports himself using only two chairs from his residence in Stuttgart to the gallery space in Berlin. Without any physical contact to the ground, this transport process realises the actual time and emotional distance of the journey.

The video was displayed in the gallery of the Korean Embassy in Berlin. In order to make it up the staircase leading to the exhibition space, two legs of each chair are sawn off. The other legs are also removed at the top of the stairs. After consultation, the artist decides on the position of the legless chairs within the space and finally steps down from the chairs. The two chairs were not moved until the end of the exhibition. A monitor with the appropriate weight was installed on the chairs and the sawn legs, sawdust and by-products produced during the process of display were placed behind the monitor.

 

김방주 김방주는 설치, 드로잉, 영상, 퍼포먼스 등의 매체를 통해 작업하고 있다. 작가는 본인을 둘러싸고 있는 현상을 관찰하고, 그 상황 자체를 사회적 규약안에 드러내거나 갈등상황에 위치 시킴으로써 작가를 포함한 사회 범주자체를 생경하게 만든다. 한국, 독일, 프랑스, 이탈리아, 터키 등에서 그룹전과 비엔날레에 참여하였으며 현재 서울과 슈투트가르트에서 활동중이다.

KIM Bangjoo KIM Bangjoo works through media such as installation, drawing, video and performance. He observes the phenomenon surrounding him and makes that situation manifest itself in the social convention or place itself in a conflict situation, thus making the social category itself unfamiliar, including himself.  He participated in lots of group exhibitions and Biennials in Korea, Germany, France, Italy and Turkey and is currently working in Seoul and Stuttgart.
