ARTIST'S NOTE

내가 생각하는 이시대의 청년들은 남들보다 뛰어나야 하며 더 좋은 스펙을 가져야 성공할 수 있다. 이런 사회구조에서 어쩌면 순응하고 피동적으로 행동하며 각자가 가진 고유성을 잃어버리고 자신이 무엇을 원하는지 조차 잃어버린다. 작가 지망생으로서 예술이라는 장르에서 마찬가지로 요즘 예술 트랜드 라는 말이 나올정도로 유행하고 그럴싸한 있어보이는 것들을 따라하는데 급급해 한다고 느끼고 있다. 그런 생각들은 좋은 스펙을 가져야 성공할 수 있듯이 더 이상 작업 또한 ‘성공’하기 위해 제출하는 포트폴리오 속 한장의 ‘스펙’ 따위가 되어 버린 것 같다고 생각한다.

인터넷의 발달과 1인방송의 시대에서, 무분별한 정보들의 선택은 시청자의 몫이 되고 있으며, 이와 같은 상황에 처한 인물 ‘성진’과 가상의 유튜버 ‘해리 정’을 설정하고 ‘성진’또한 간절함 에 정보들을 맹신하는 태도를 가지며 그것이 허위의 정보 임에도 불구하고 좋은‘스펙’을 쌓기 위해 얻은 정보들을 가지고 외적으로 행동하고 작품을 제작한다. 그러나 제작된 작품은 사회에서 요구 되어지는 ‘스펙’일뿐 그 이상의 가치를 지니지 못한다는 점에서 오는 무기력함과 무엇이 예술을 예술답게 하며, 작업에 임하는 진정성에 대해 스스로에게 질문을 던지고자 한다.

I believe that test scores, background, capacity, and all that sort of things are considered as critical success factors. Young people adapt to this structure of society, have a passive attitude, lose part of their identity, and they don't even know what they really want to do. They might feel that they are just a part in portfolio submitted for only success. With the development of the Internet, there is a lot of information. we need to choose right one in this steady flood of information. The choice is ours. Seong-Jin who is facing the situation and Harry Jung, a fictional YouTube creator, were set. Because Seong-Jin is desperate for success, believing blindly information, he creates a work of art. However, he realizes that the work of art is nothing but just a part of his career. And he asks himself a question, "What makes art art?"

정성진

정성진은 서울시립대학교 환경조각학과를 졸업하고 영상, 설치, 조각 작업을 기반으로 빠르게 변화하고 바뀌는 동시대에서 파생 되어지는 모순 속에서 나름의 방식으로 다양하게 표현하고 있다. 또한 현재, 작가로서 '한국에서 어떻게 생을 유지할수 있는가' 라는 주제를 가지고 작업을 이어 나가고 있다.

JEONG Seongjin graduated from the University of Seoul with a degree in environmental sculpture. His works of art have been crafted on the basis of sculpture, installation art, and video art. He tries to express his unique style, adapting to fast-changing times. Also, at this moment, he is working on the theme "how to make a living in Korea as an artist".
