ART AND WORK

Last year, Nemaf took the time to think about contemporary ‘monsters’ that are related to death, unfamiliar and frightening beings such as diseases, viruses, monsters, and ghosts under the theme of ‘Monster on the hill : Life ALive’. The COVID-19 virus that determines the boundary between life and death is invisible and terrifying, so it has had a great impact on our lives to the extent that we have to reorganize the communities of friends and acquaintances, and even the order of the community. Some extreme measures have been taken to force us to wear a mask, prevent us from meeting more than four people, and
maintain social distancing in movie theaters.
    I have a question here.
Like extreme measures to prevent and respond to COVID-19, can't there be strong measures to protect the socially disadvantaged and counteract discrimination and violence? I felt that a powerful device that has to be 'excluded' and 'extinct', that is an attitude toward countless beings that have been 'dehumanized' or 'dehumanized', is like acting for the weak as well, watching how they obey and trust the nation's orders, compared to other countries. In addition, I wanted to ask again 'What is labor in art?’ by asking 'what about art now?', which can be the domain of the socially underprivileged in that capitalist society'. If the feminist movement arose along with the resistance movement against what had been viewed as women’s unpaid and naturalized labor, we need to examine how today's art can be transformed into unpaid labor in the arts in the 4th revolution and pandemic society in the transnational capitalist society? I think it is important to discuss the value of 'labor' in arts that starts from the aesthetic experience of humans, in a situation where the categories of art are being reconstructed. Artists struggle a lot between art that makes money and art that doesn't. In particular, alternative arts that pursues a new form of art that arises to raise and overcome the issues of fundamental art like fine art, simply put, belongs to the type of art that costs a lot of money but does not make money. Therefore, alternative arts requires policy protection and support including basic research, but the reality is that it is unpaid like housework/care work.
This year, Nemaf intends to provide a venue to discuss the theme of art and labor, where we can share a variety of thoughts, not a single answer. So, we aim to say that the need for basic incomes of artists is an important agenda in today's society, proposing that fine artists and alternative artists are placed in the structure of exploitation of people, while raising the issue that the artist's unpaid labor is not valued in capitalist society, but fine artists and alternative artists are under circumstances where someone makes surplus value and exploits art capitals through real estate, buildings, local economy, brand economy, and replica capital products derived from the labor of artists. I hope that there will be a variety of discussions about art and labor during the festival, through the main exhibition, 'A Creative Activity : The Work of Film', 'ART, What kind of Work' at Nemaf ALT Cinema Theory School, and the symposium 'Art and Work Replay', and expert meetings.
