Numerous colonial places, including coastal caves and military bunkers on a lot of Oreums, as well as memories of uprising and massacres are everywhere on Jeju Island. This work is based on René Magritte's "La condition humaine, 1935", which is a view of the outside of the cave superimposed on a canvas. The camera captures landscapes of caves and bunkers in Jeju Island as having quotes from Hollis Frampton’s <A Lecture> performance script, and asks the media could capture the image of historic vestige on the landscape without any distortion or elimination.
Looking into the cave from outside is like looking inside of cameras, and when I go into the cave and observe outside, the landscape through the entrance of the cave is like a screen. I imagined people’s situations when they had to be hidden only inside the caves and looked at the outside landscape in the tragic era. Originally looking outside a cave seems like watching a screen in a theater. And if the cave can be considered as the inside of a camera, I thought that the scenery that could be seen in front of the eyes would be different depending on which filter was placed at the entrance. The experimental filmmaker Hollis Frampton stated that the red filter placed in front of the projector gate allows us to see more of the blue and green, rather than see more of the red color, I thought that the story could meet the historical landscapes in Jeju.
While studying the material and technical features of the time-based medium of film and its capacity to contain senses, the artist focused on how various conditions that surround the medium—such as physical/optical rules and projection environments—could reveal the conventional fiction of the “standard” and the “norms” within social and cultural contexts. The artist's work has screened at international film festivals and media venues including Toronto International Film festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival, Ex-is,Onion City, Black Maria and Ann Arbor Film Festival. She recently resides in Incheon Art Platform artist residency.
