ARTIST'S NOTE

2012년부터 전국의 여러 마을을 다니면서 정월대보름 축제를 촬영하였다. 특별한 목적 없는, 아날로그 필름을 사용한 아주 사적인 촬영이었다. 텍스트를 제외한 모든 푸티지는 이러한 활동에서 나온 것이다. 한편 나는 만주지역과 관련 있는 몇 가지 작업을 위해 당시 만주지역과 연관 있는 작가 및 작품들을 리서치하고 있었다. 이기영은 그 소설가 중 한 명이다. 그는 경향문학의 대표주자였고, 해방 이후 월북하였기에 오랜 기간 그의 작품들은 한국에서 외면받았다. 정월대보름 축제의 쥐불놀이를 뜻하는 서화는 그의 대표작 중 하나이다. 이 작업은 이러한 두 가지 활동이 만나면서 완성되었다.

Since 2012, I have filmed the traditional festival that is to celebrate the first full moon of a year in various villages. This activity is very personal like an annual outing for me and I fully enjoy myself the experience of shooting with film medium. All footage except the text comes from those activities. Meanwhile, I have worked on several projects related with Manchuria action films and researched many authors and literatures related with Manchuria region. And Lee Ki-young is one of them. Since he defected to North Korea after liberation from Japanese colonial rule, his name was a taboo in South Korea for a long time. Rat Fire is the title of his novel and is also one of main activities of the festival described above. So this work was completed through two activities.
