ARTIST'S NOTE

울산광역시는 1962년 2월 3일 특정공업지구로 지정되고 경제 발전을 이끌었던 도시이다. 전국에서 모인 다양한 사람들이 현재 이 도시에서 살고있다. ‘출향(出鄕)’은 제주도에서 태어나 울산에 정착한 해녀 양순택의 이야기를 담고 있다. 86세인 그녀의 기억들은 일제 치하와 광복, 전쟁, 그리고 산업화 과정 속에서 타지인이 되어야 했던 개인적 삶의 기억들을 보여준다. 그녀의 삶은 ‘살아가기‘가 아닌 ‘살아남기‘였다. 생존을 위해 현지인보다 훨씬 큰 노력이 필요했고 희생도 따랐다. 작가는 역사 속에 배제되고 소외되었던 한 개인의 역사를 영상 이미지로 구체화하였다.

A port city on the South Sea, Ulsan played a leading role in South Korea’s eco-<br /> nomic development after its designation as an industrial clustersite on February 3, 1962. A diverse population hailing from all over Korea currently livesin the city. Leaving Hometown isthe story of Sun-taek YANG, a haenyeo (woman diver who collects seafood without underwater equipment) who was born in Jeju, the haenyeo‘s place of origin, and settled in Ulsan afterwards. The memory of this 86-year-old haenyeo shares what it islike to be an outsider who has experienced Japanese colonialism, Korea’s liberation, the Korean War, and industrialization. Her life has not been about “living,” but about “surviving.”She has to work harder than the locals to survive, and inevitably she has to make greatsacrifi ces. Leaving Hometown uses visual imagesto concretize the memories of an individual who hassuff ered alienation and discrimination.
