경상남도 거창 출생. 중앙대학교 사진학과를 졸업한 후 1994년 뉴욕으로 이주하였다. 1998년 뉴욕대학교에서 사진 전공으로 석사학위를 받은 후 뉴욕대 대학원 시절 자신을 관광객, 여피족, 술집 댄서, 래퍼, 레즈비언, 펑크족, 학생, 노인 등으로 변신시켜 찍은 14개의 사진 프로젝트인 <프로젝트>(1997~2001)를 발표해 세간의 주목을 받았다. 이후 <파트>(2002~2005), <레이어스>(2006~) 등의 작품 속에서 다민족사회인 미국의 이미지를 담아냈다. <니키리라고도 알려진>는 니키 S. 리의 첫 영화 프로젝트로 뉴욕 등지에서 자신의 정체성을 탐구하는 다큐멘터리이다. 2006년 뉴욕현대미술관에서 상영되었다.

LEE was born in Geochang in the Gyungsangdo province. After studying Photography at Chung Ang University, she moved to New York in 1994. She received much attention by transforming herself into a traveller, rapper, lesbian or Punk in the project where 14 photos of her were collected. Works like Part (2002~2005), Layers (2006~) puts into portrayal the muitl-race community of the US. A.K.A. Nikki S Lee, which screened at the Museum of Modern Art New York, is her first film project that documents the exploration of her own identity.
