방값은 오르고, 쫓겨날까 봐 눈치를 살피고, 새벽부터 밤까지 죽도록 일해도 가난을 벗을 길 없는 도시빈민들.대다수는 시골에서 땅을 잃고 서울로 온 이농민이다. 서울사람 서넛 중 하나는 이 빈민이라지만, 이들을 향한 사회의 눈초리는 차갑기 그지없다. 김동원 감독이 푸른영상을 설립하기 전 만들었던 ‘빈 영상’시절의 작품. 구슬픈 음악과 함께 빈민들의 애환이 이어지지만, 영화는 끝까지 희망을 놓지 않고 “함께 사는 세상”을 꿈꾼다.
The economic progress of Korea, has exacerbated the social disparity that exists in Seoul. Impoverished, and thus discriminated against, villagers feel the crushing burden of supporting their families and keeping a roof over their heads. However, developers who clear the villages in Seoul to build apartment buildings, leave them homeless, and unable to afford the high rental costs. For some, death is a better alternative to the indignities that they suffer in life.

김동원 김동원 감독의 다큐멘터리 인생은 ‘우연’으로 이루어져 있다고 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다. 우연히 상계동에 들어가 주민들과 함께 한 3년의 기록은 <상계동 올림픽>(1988)이 되었다. 또한 우연히 한 동네에서 살게 된 비 전향장기수들과 오랜 시간 동안 관계를 맺으며 자연스레 <송환>(2003)이 만들어졌다. 그러나 그는 이러한 우연 속에서 만난 소외된 사람들을 쉽게 지나치지 않고 그들 곁에 머물며 함께 살기를 ‘선택’했다. 그렇게 그는 한국 다큐멘터리 역사에 있어 기념비적인 작품을 만들어 냈고, 실천적 다큐멘터리의 정수이자 한국 다큐멘터리와 독립영화계의 정신적 지주로 자리매김 하고 있다.

Dongwon Kim KIM Dong-won is like a godfather to Korean documentaries. As the leader of [PURN Production], a documentary production house that focused on unearthing the contradictions of Korean society from a progressive viewpoint. His debut movie, <Sangye-dong Olympics>(1987), deals with people of Sangye-dong, an area of Seoul that was torn down by the government only because the area was “not easy on eyes” in the years leading up to the Seoul Olympics of 1988. In <Repatriation> (2004), arguably his best work, KIM Dong-won’s camera followed in breathing distance the lives of unconverted long-term pro-North Korea prisoners in South Korean jails. KIM’s works provided textbook examples to Korea’s documentary directors that followed in his footsteps. |
