DESCRIPTION
배우 헬렌 미렌이 토크쇼 사회자 마이클 파킨슨과 나눴던 대화를 작가가 노래 및 공연으로 재구성한 작품으로, 생방송으로 기록된 텔레비전 프로그램의 구성 방식 안에 나타나는 즉흥성과 권력 균형에 대해 탐구하고, 역사적인 성차별의 예로 자주 언급되는 특정 인터뷰를 인용(re-cite)하거나 암송(recite)한다.
Dame 2 recreates an interview on Parkinson with Helen Mirren from 1975, transcribed and performed as a song by Elkin. She is backed by a choir of associates and friends she corrals into chanting in loose harmony. The work explores the notion of improvisation and power-balance within the recorded-as-live TV format, and re-cites/recites this particular interview, which is so often referenced as an example of historic sexism. The work was originally a performance in 2013, and was repurposed as a video in 2016 for the exhibition Television at CCA Glasgow.

캐스린 엘킨 1983년에 벨파스트에서 태어난 캐스린 엘킨은 글래스고 예술학교(2005)와 골드스미스 대학(2012)을 졸업했고, LUX 협회 작가(2013)로 활동한 바 있다. 현재 버릭어폰트위드에서 거주 중으로 엘킨의 공연 및 비디오 작업은 발췌와 무대 광대학을 활용한 실험과 더불어 역할 연기(role-playing)와 즉흥성에 관한 것이다. 공유된 문화적 기억(대중음악, 텔레비전 프로그램, 영화)과 이러한 정보를 전기적인(biographical) 기억으로 혼합하는 것에 지속적으로 관심을 가져왔다. 노섬브리아 대학에서 2017 워릭 스태포드 장학금을 수여받았고 리버풀 존 무어 대학에서 파트타임으로 학생들을 가르치고 있다.

Kathryn ELKIN Kathryn Elkin (born in Belfast, 1983) is a graduate of Glasgow School of Art (2005) and Goldsmiths College (2012) and former LUX Associate Artist (2013). She is currently based in Berwick Upon Tweed. Elkin’s performance and video works concern role-playing and improvising, alongside experiments with the outtake and clowning on set. She has an ongoing interest in shared cultural memory (as produced by popular music, television and cinema) and the melding of this information to biographical memory. She was a participant in the BBC project Artists in the Archive in 2014, and completed a solo exhibition at CCA Glasgow titled ‘Television’ in 2016. |
