Artist's Statement
이 작업은 1961년 영등포에 근로자 합숙소가 완공되었다는 국가 기록원의 뉴스필름에서 시작한다. 45초 분량의 뉴스필름에서 시작한 자료 조사는 신문과 잡지, 공공기관의 행정서류 등으로 이어졌다. 이 과정에서 발견된 대부분의 이야기들은 사고나 범죄 사건들과 연관된 것이었다. 이것은 왜 근로자 합숙소의 기록이 완공 이후에는 국가기록원에 남아 있지 않은지를 짐작하게 한다. 이 작업은 매혹과 한계가 동시에 존재하는 공공 아카이브의 경계를 탐구하며, ‘아직 말해지지 않은 이야기’ 를 재구성해 들려준다.
This work started from the news film in the National Archives of Korea that announced the establishment of the boardinghouse for workers in Yeongdeunpo in 1961. For this 45-second news film, the research included newspapers, magazines, administrative documents of public institutions and etc. The most of the stories, found in this process, were about accidents or crimes and explained the reason that the National Archives of Korea did not keep records about the boardinghouse for workers after the complete establishment. This work studied the boundary of the public archive where fascination and limitation coexisted and showed ‘the story that has not been told’ by recomposing them.

권혜원 권혜원 작가는 특정한 사건이나 기억이 배어 있는 장소들을 리서치 한 후, 이것을 영상으로 서사화한다. 그는 영상을 서사 구조를 구축하는 현장으로 생각하고, 리서치 과정에서 발견된 요소들을 통해 공간적이고, 조형적인 서사구조를 만들어낸다. 2011년 영국 블룸버그 뉴컨템포러리 작가로 선정되었으며, 최근 참여한 전시로는 백남준아트센터의 <웅얼거리고 일렁거리는>, 국립현대미술관 덕수궁관의 <신여성, 도착하다> 등이 있다. |
KWON Hyewon Kwon Hyewon captures stories of individuals and spaces hidden from historical records and reconstructs them into videos, after researching places associated with particular past events and memories. She was selected as a Bloomberg New Contemporary(United Kingdom) in 2011 and participated in the SeMA Nanji Residency, the Seoul Museum of Art’s residency program, in 2016. Her recent exhibitions include 《Common Front, Affectively》(Nam June Pail Art Center, Yongin , 2018), 《The Arrival of New Women》(MMCA Deoksugung Gallery, Seoul, 2017). |
