DESCRIPTION

The film is a visual experiment dealing with a political rupture namely“ the candlelight revolution ” in S.Korea in the winter 2016-2017. Instead of narrativising the revolution the film focuses on the repetitiveness of images of revolutions in order to deliver the affects of ‘negative utopia’ present at the square. Performance and pre-enactment were employed as new documenting tools, as the film creates dialogues between the past archive and the newly constructed scenes. The work is largely inspired by Nagisa Oshima’s 1970 film “The Man Who Left His Will on Film” from which the excerpts were also used.

2016년 겨울, 변화에 대한 열망으로 가득차 있던 촛불 혁명의 광장은 사실 낯선 풍경은 아니었다. 20세기 내내 재현 혹은 재생산되었던 혁명의 이미지들이 그곳에 서도 반복되었기 때문이다. 하지만 어떤 이들은 다가올 변화의 주류에 자신이 포함되지 않을 것을 알면서도 촛불과 깃발을 들었다. 이 영화는 과거에도 미래에도 언어가 없을 이들의 이야기, 곧 잊혀져버리고 말 감상과 정치적 함의들을 2016년 당시 퍼포먼스로 기록한 시도이다. 나기사 오시마의 영화 <도쿄전쟁전후비화> 그 리고 김명순의 시 <유언> 등을 인용 및 발췌하여 재해석한 퍼포먼스는 참조된 작품들과 함께 영상콜라쥬의 형식을 띈다.

김성은, 제니조

김성은은 베를린과 제주를 오가며 살고있는 영화를 만드는 사람이자 영상활동가이다. 베를린 자유대에서 영상인류학을 베를린 예술대학교에서 미디어아트를 공부했다.

제니조는 서울에서 태어나 뉴욕대학교 순수미술과 학사와 컬럼비아대학교 석사 과정을 마치고 뉴욕과 서울에서 활동 중인 미술작가이다. 신도리코 문화공간, 두산 갤러리 서울과 뉴욕 그리고 가나 갤러리 뉴욕에서 개인전을 개최하였다.

KIM Sungeun, CHO Jenny

KIM Sungeun is a filmmaker and visual anthropologist based in Berlin and Jeju Island (S.Korea). She graduated with a Meisterschueler degree in Art and Media at UdK Berlin, an MA in visual anthropology from Freie Universitaet Berlin and BFA in studio art at New York University.

CHO Jenny is an artist based in Seoul and New York. She holds an MFA from Columbia University; BFA from New York University. Recent exhibitions include: Illuminating Shade for Big Window/ Sindoh Art Space; Artspectrum (2014)/ Leeum, Samsung Museum and In-Between: Through eyes of the others/ Doosan Gallery Seoul and New York. She is also a co-founder and curator of Weekend, an autonomous art space in Seoul.
