ARTIST'S NOTE

영화가 현실을 단순히 재현하는 것이 아니라 극이 축조되는 과정 그 자체를 탐구하고 이를 이미지로 다시 표현하는 구조를 만들고자 했다. 나도 배우도, 가상의 서사를 만들어가는 주체인 동시에 그 안에서 변화를 겪는 존재이다. 우연과 필연이 교차하는 삶 속에서 영화라는 매체는 얼마나 쇠약한 것인가. (그럼에도 아름다울 수 있는가)

In this film, I sought not merely to reproduce reality, but to explore the very process by which theatrical illusion is constructed—and to rearticulate it through images. Both the actor and I are, at once, agents in the making of illusion and beings transformed by that very act. In a life where chance and necessity intersect, how fragile a medium cinema proves to be.

여기 한 배우가 있다. 텍스트와 이미지 사이의 지극히 위협적인 틈새에 머물기를 요구받은 이. 알 수 없는 오류로 인해 과거의 흔적이 지워진 공백들 속에서 그는 자신만의 각본을 조립하기 시작한다.

Here is an actor, one who has been asked to dwell in the perilous gap between text and image. Amidst the voids where traces of the past have been erased by an unknown error, she begins to assemble her own script.

백종관Jongkwan PAIK

백종관은 아카이빙과 리서치를 바탕으로 한 실험적인 영상 작업을 지속해 오고 있다. 일상의 사건을 비일상적인 시선으로 접근하여 이미지와 사운드를 채집하고 그들이 각자 위치해 있는 상황 속에서 어떠한 사회적 맥락을 전유할 수 있는지를 탐구한다. <그들은 우리의 응시에 응답한다>(2021), <추방자들>(2018), <순환하는 밤>(2016) 등의 영화를 연출했으며 무용, 연극, 건축 전문가들과 협업을 수행하며 극장 상영, 전시 설치 등 다양한 경로를 통해 작품을 발표하고 있다.

Jongkwan PAIK engages in experimental video production grounded in research and archiving, continuing to create films that explore images through in-depth study. Paik makes films for both the cinema and the gallery, and has presented his works “They answer our own gaze”(2021), “Deportees”(2018), “Cyclical Night”(2016) at diverse venues & film festivals.
