유년시절 동물원은 내게 매우 환상적인 경험을 준 공간이다. 특히 창경궁(당시는 창경원이라 불린)은 동물원, 놀이공원, 고궁이 공존한 묘한 공간이었다. 아마도 유년시절의 기억은 그곳에서의 사건, 함께한 사람들, 음식, 날씨 등에 대한 정서적 흔적으로 남아 있는듯하다. 구체적 사건이 아닌 정서적 부유라는 다소 현실과 가상의 경계가 모호한 형태의 개인적 정서였다. 이러한 여러 요소의 공존이, 창경궁의 비극적인 근대역사(순종 때, 일제에 의해 창경궁을 조롱하고 격하시키는 목적으로 동물원이 만들어진)에서 비롯되었다는 것을 교육을 통해 알게 되었다. 그 후에도 창경궁은 해방과 한국전쟁을 거치면서 동물들이 수난을 당한 역사를 가지고 있다. 이런 역사를 알게 된 후 창경궁 공간들은 더 이상 이전의 정서적 반응을 일으키지 않았다. 현실과 환상의 모호한 경계를 이루던 정서적 기억들은 둘로 정확하게 쪼개지기 시작했고, 동시에 현실과 환상 어느 쪽에도 그 정서는 남아있지 않았다.

As a child, zoo was a space that gave me a very fantastic experience. In particular, Changgyeonggung (then called Changgyeongwon) was a strange place where zoo, amusement parks and old palaces coexist. Perhaps childhood memories remain as an emotional vestige of events there, of people with whom, of food, of weather, etc. It was not a specific event, but apersonal emotion which lies somewhere around the boundaries between the reality and the virtual. It was learned through education that the coexistence of these elements came fromthe tragic modern history of Changgyeonggung (in the time of Japanese rule, a zoo was created for the purpose of mocking and degrading Changgyeonggung Palace).Even then, Changgyeonggung has a history of animals being victimized during liberation and the Korean War. After learning of this history, the space of Changgyeong Palace no longer had aroused any previous emotional reactions. Emotional memories that had formed the ambiguous boundaries between reality and fantasy began to divide exactly in two, and at thesame time there was no emotion left on either side of reality and fantasy.
