DESCRIPTION

우리 안에 "있는" 이웃들이지만, "있음"이 부정되는 이들의 인간상을 기록한 자전적 비디오 초상화 연작. 주류라는 환상에 빠진 자들이 외면해온 이야기, 드러나지 못한 채 묻히고 왜곡되던 이야기, 하지만 분명히 우리와 함께 살아가는 이들의 이야기를 수집한다. 이들의 얼굴을 정면으로 마주하고 담담하게 전달되는 목소리를 들음으로써, 우리는 이들이 각자의 이야기를 지니고 살아가지만 우리와 같은 시공간을 공유하며 살고 있는 아주 보통의 이웃들임을 인식하게 된다. 이것이 오늘날의 "우리 시대의 얼굴" (잔더, 1929)을 마주하는 방법 아닐까.

An autobiographical video portrait series documenting the story of people whose existence is denied. This work is a collection of stories that have been neglected by those obsessed with the illusion of the mainstream, stories that have been buried and distorted without being brought to light. However, these stories belong to our unquestionably "existent" neighbors. By facing their faces and listening to their calm voices, we realize that even though they each have their own stories, they are ordinary neighbors living in the same space and time as us. It is how we face the "Face of Our Time" (August Sander, 1929) these days.

"옆에서 듣는 사람이 되고 싶습니다. 앞에서 보는 사람이 되고 싶습니다. 저에게 들린 소리를 모두가 듣기를, 저에게 보인 얼굴을 모두가 보기를. 가만히 듣는 것, 그리고 가만히 보는 것. 이것이 우리의 나아갈 방향을 가리켜줍니다." 국민대 영상디자인학과 졸업 후, 현재는 대만 타이베이의 국립정치대 커뮤니케이션대학에서 인터-아시아 미디어와 문화를 연구하고 있다. 시각 및 대중 문화, 문화 교류, 소수자, 디아스포라 등의 키워드를 횡단하며 인터-아시아적 관점에서 작업과 연구를 진행해 왔고, 앞으로도 그럴 예정이다.

“I want to be a listener by others' side. I want to be a person gazing at others. May everyone hear the voices I hear, and may everyone see the faces I see. Listening and gazing quietly guide our way day by day.” After graduating from the Department of Entertainment Design at Kookmin University in Seoul, Korea, he is currently pursuing his studies in Inter-Asia media and culture at the College of Communication, National Chengchi University in Taipei, Taiwan. His work and research are driven by an Inter-Asian perspective, exploring diverse themes such as visual and popular culture, cultural exchange, minorities, and diaspora.
