DESCRIPTION

<스카이 이즈 온 파이어>는 가상 세계에 도시 경관을 재건하는 과정 속에서 디지털 문화와 기억이 통합하는 모습을 그리고 있다. 현존하는 영역은 스마트폰 어플리케이션 기술을 통해 지도로 그려지면서 디지털 세계에 재건된다. 디지털 세계에 재건된 마이애미의 거리는, 스마트폰으로 스캔하는 과정 속에서 지형적 특징을 제외한 데이터가 손실되며, 표면적 정보만이 남는다는 사실을 시사한다. 스캔 기술을 통해 가상 세계에 구축된, 시간에 구애받지 않는 디지털 폐허가 만들어진 것이다. 카메라가 공허한 디지털 폐허를 탐사하는 동안, 불면증에 시달리는 도시의 거주자 채즈의 목소리를 들을 수 있다.

The Sky Is on Fire interrogates digital culture and memory through a virtual reconstruction of the urban landscape. Through the use of a smartphone application, it maps a territory by reconstructing it. The film trawls the Miami back streets, strangely deadened by the use of a technology that can “scan” the environment using a smartphone, and delivering an account in which only the surface remains. This technology generates a digitised reality, fixed outside of time, a form of digital ruins. A camera explores and probes the banality of these reconstituted places, while off-camera we can hear the voice of Chaz, an insomniac city dweller.

Emmanuel Van der Auwera (b. 1982, Belgium) lives and works in Brussels. Through filmmaking, video sculpture, theatre, printmaking and other media, Van der Auwera sets up encounters with found images that provoke a questioning of our visual literacy: How do images of contemporary mass media operate on various audiences, and to what end? With the formal rigor of a logician, the artist dissects how images are engineered, mastering specialized industry techniques and intervening in their protocol. In so doing, Van der Auwera brings us no closer to a monolithic truth, but constructs new paradigms for reading images and understanding our relationships with them.
