<저 너머 텅 빈 땅>은 20세기 초 제국이 무너지고 또 다른 새로운 국가가 탄생하는 동안 전쟁과 식민지화로 대규모 이주가 발생한 만주 지역에 주목한다. 일본의 농업 정착민들은 식민지 기구의 일원이 되어 새로운 세계를 개척하고자 만주로 이주한다. 개척민이 된 이들은 비옥한 흑색토가 있는 이국 땅에 '집'을 짓고 자신의 기원을 버리고 새로 만들어진 정체성에 적응한다. '갈망-개척-떠남-정체-송환-부정'의 정념적 순환에 갇혀서 그리워하던 조국이나 고향 어디에도 속하지 못한 채 어둠의 땅에서 피폐한 삶을 살아낸다. 제2차 세계대전이 끝난 지 70년이 지난 지금, 이 프로젝트는 공간과 물질을 통해 인간의 존재를 추적하는 것 외에도 현재 둥베이(중국 북동부)를 여전히 사로잡고 있는 무언의 집단 기억과 의식, 신체적 경험과 정서를 세심하게 살핀다.

The Shadow Lands Yonder (虛無鄉遠) centers in Manchuria in the early twentieth century, while an empire collapsed and another new state was created, subsequently massive displacement was driven by war and colonisation. Japanese agrarian settlers were part of the colonial apparatus, developing a new world, making 'home' in a foreign land with fertile black soil, abandoning their origins and fitting in a newly invented identity. The settlers were trapped in an affective cycle of ‘longing - developing - leaving - stagnation - repatriation - denial’, their lives were drained in the Shadow Lands, while they had belonged to neither the country nor homeland that they longed for. Seventy years after the end of WWII, apart from tracing human existence through space and materials, this project scrutinises the unspoken collective memories and consciousness, bodily experiences and affects that still haunt Dongbei (Northeast China) at present.
