우리(통제, 조절되는 사회)
‘나’라고 표현되어지는 개인은 외부작용에 의해 ‘우리’라는 집단, 단체주의로 휩쓸리게 된다. 그리고, 집단주의적 정서에 대한 비판의식의 결여는 집단주의적 동원의 메커니즘이 잘 기능할 수 있는 토양을 제공한다. 그런 집단주의 의식은 개인의 정체성을 집단주의 정체성으로 변화시켜 자발적 참여를 하게 하고, 집단 광기에 빠지게 하며, 그 광기에 빠진 대중들은 집단의 이익을 위해 쓰여지는 수단이 된다.
이 무비판적 대중이 전체주의적 동원 기제에 포섭된 현상을 표현하기 위해 단채널 비디오 작업 <우리>는 화면 전체에 객석을 채우고, 관객들의 반복되는 등장과 사라짐이 사물놀이 음악에 서로 동조하게 하여, 마치 음악에 의해 집단동화되는 단체주의적 특성을 나타내게 했다. 부연하면, 사물놀이 음악은 기승전결이 확실하고, 흥쾌한 리듬으로 점점 관객들을 음악에 동화시키고, 클라이맥스에서는 숨조차 쉴 수 없게 고조시키는 특성이 있다. 이에 이 음악은 이 작업의 집단을 동화시키게 되는 모티브 역할이 되고, 그에 따라 화면에 나타나게 되는 관객들은 그에 장단 맞추어지는 집단주의의 특성을 나타내게 된다. 그리고, 이 집단주의적 특성을 더욱 시각적으로 치밀하게 표현하기 위해 예전 전제주의 국가들에서 많이 보여졌던 경기장의 숙련된 카드섹션의 표본과 유사하게 차용하여 완벽하게 짜여진 집단주의적 질서를 표현하여 보는 이로 하여금 개인의 자율과 자유 의지의 소중함을 역설하였다. 물론, 이 작업을 보는 사람에 따라서는 전혀 이런 의도와는 상관없이 음악에 의해 조율되는 시각적 유희로 볼 수도 있다. 그러나 이도 전혀 틀린 생각은 아닌 듯싶다.

“We” in Highly Controlled Society.
An individual expressed in the term “I” is subject to transform one’s identity into something collective or totalitarian, represented by the term “we.” A fertile soil for collectivism is usually offered by the lack of critical mind. Infatuated with such collectivist consciousness, individuals easily become extremely fanatic and obsessed with collectivist purposes, losing their distinctive identity.
To express totalitarian aspirations of the masses the video work, WE fills the screen with a number of seats and spectators whose motions are uniformly repetitive and accompanied by the “Samul” music. With apparent ups and downs in its process and giddy and buoyant rhythm, the music has a characteristic to gradually assimilate the spectators and finally bring them to the climax of excitement. The work paradoxically stresses the significance of individual freedom and autonomy by delineating strictly collective order. The work, in disregard of such intention, can be interpreted as a presentation of visual pleasures along with musical amusement.
