1980년 5.18 광주민중항쟁 당시 사망한 희생자 중 10대 어린이 · 청소년은 무려 57명에 달한다. 다 자라지 못한 그 작은 몸에 수없이 많은 총알과 대검이 관통했고, 주검은 군홧발에 짓밟혔다. 이 가운데 초등학교 4학년 전재수, 중학교 1학년 방광범 학생도 무참히 희생되었다. 왜 계엄군은 어린 아이들까지 죽여야 했나? 아이들이 죽어야 하는 이유는 따위는 없었다. 본 영화를 이를 기억하고 마음에 새기고자 한다.
Among the victims of the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Uprising in 1980, 57 were teenagers. The small body, which had not grown up, was stabbed wildly by countless guns and knives, and their dead bodies were trampled on by soldiers. Jeon Jae-soo, a fourth-year elementary school student, and Bang Gwang-beom, a first-year middle school student were one of them. Why did martial law forces have to kill even young children? There was no reason for the children to die. This film tries to remember this fact and keep it in mind.
DESCRIPTION
엄마한테 열두 살 생일 선물로 새 운동화를 받은 광주의 소년 정새날. 동네 뒷산 저수지에서 친구들과 함께 놀다가 계엄군이 쏜 총에 맞아 목숨을 잃은 새날이는 달빛과 찔레꽃 향기에 깨어나, 운동화 비행기를 타고 광주 시내로 날아간다. 새날이는 계엄군의 총칼에 맞서 한마음으로 민주주의를 위해 싸운 수많은 사람들을 만나고, 운동화 비행기를 타고 하늘 높이 날아간다.
Jeong Sae-nal, the young boy in Gwang-ju City, receives new sneakers as a 12th birthday gift, but he is shot by martial law forces while playing with his friends in a mountain reservoir in the back of the town. Sae-nal wakes up to the moonlight and the scent of wild roses, and flies to downtown of Gwang-ju City on a sneaker plane. He meets countless people who fought for democracy against the soldier's guns and flies high in a sneaker plane.

서울대학교 미술대학 서양화과를 졸업했고, 동국대학교 대학원 연극영화과를 졸업했다. 현재 오토마타 공작소 대표감독으로 독립 애니메이션과 오토마타 창작 활동을 하고 있다. <내일인간>(1994), <연필 이야기>(1995), <순환>(1996), <사랑해요>(1997), <미메시스 TV>(2000), <하늘나무>(2003), <Cold Blood>(2004), <오월상생>(2007), <전쟁놀이>(2013), <금정굴 이야기>(2021), <확장적 공존>(2022), <운동화 비행기>(2022), <아르브뤼 작가들의 미술여행>(2023) 등의 독립 애니메이션과 다큐멘터리를 만들었고, 오버하우젠 국제단편영화제, 테헤란 국제단편영화제, 로마 독립영화제, 오타와 국제애니메이션페스티벌, 베를린 국제단편영화제, 트레본 국제애니메이션페스티벌, 히로시마 국제애니메이션페스티벌, 부산국제영화제, 전주국제영화제, 서울독립영화제, 홍콩 월드필름 페스티벌, 일본 국제영화제, 부다페스트 영화제, 프라하 국제영화제, 뭄바이 국제단편영화제, 키에즈 베를린 영화제, 로마 단편영화제 등 국내외 영화제에서 작품을 상영했고, 다수의 상을 수상했다.
Chon Seung-il graduated from College of Fine Arts, Seoul National University, and Graduated from Dongguk University Graduate School. He is an animation and automata director at Automata Factory. Chon Seung-il created the independent animations and documentary <Tomorrow Human>(1994), <Pencil Story>(1995), <Circulation>(1996), <We Love You>(1997), <MIMESIS TV>(2000), <Cosmic Tree>(2003), <Cold Blood>(2004), <Memory of May>(2007), <My War>(2013), <Korean GENOCIDE>(2021), <Expanded Coexistence>(2022), <A Boy of May>(2023), <Travel of Art Brut Artists>(2023). His animation has been shown at world-renowned film festivals including the Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, Tehran International Short Film Festival, Rome Independent Film Festival, Ottawa International Animation Festival, International Short Film Festival Berlin, International Festival of Animated Films AniFest Trebon, Hiroshima International Animation Festival, Busan International Film Festival, Jeonju International Film Festival, Seoul Independent Film Festival, Hong Kong World Film Festival, Japan International Film Festival, Budapest Film Festival, Prague International Film Festival, Mumbai Shorts International Film Festival, Kiez Berlin Film Festival, Roma Short Film Festival, and won several awards.
