ARTIST'S NOTE

2018년 가을, 한국의 10대, 20대들 사이에 식이장애 발병율이 높아진다는 기사를 보고 처음 취재를 시작했다. 수십 명의 여성들을 인터뷰하고 관련 자료를 찾던 중 한 학교에서 전작 <피의 연대기> 상영 제안을 받았다.
상영 후 GV 시간, 차기작이 무엇이냐는 질문에 식이장애를 다룬 다큐멘터리를 준비 중이라고 했다. 행사가 끝난 후 나를 학교에 초청한 박상옥 선생님이 주차장까지 따라와 딸 채영이 10년 넘게 식이장애를 앓고 있다고 말했다.
그날, 상옥의 깊은 우물 같은 눈에서 나는 어떤 고통을 봤고, 채영 씨를 만나게 해달라고 했다. 그렇게 이 이야기가 시작됐다. 몸을 괴롭혀야만 하는 질병, 먹는 것이라는 가장 말초적인 행위를 극단으로 몰아붙여 몸을 축내야만 생존할 수 있는 마음을 채영은 자신과 비슷한 일을 겪을지 모르는 누군가들을 위해 나와 카메라 앞에서 이야기 해주었다.
한 개인이 겪는 신체적 정신적 질병의 기원은 결코 그 자신이나 가족에게만 있지 않다. 이 영화는 채영의 몸이 겪는 고통의 복잡하고 얽히고설킨 실타래의 매듭들을 아주 일부 더듬어나가며 맥락을 찾으려는 시도이다.

In the fall of 2018, I began researching this topic after reading an article about the rising number of eating disorder patients, especially among teenagers and 20-somethings in Korea. While interviewing dozens of women and searching for related materials, I met the two main characters, Chaeyoung and Sangok. Through their story, I was able to glimpse into the deep and complex depths of eating disorders, which are conveniently shrouded with labels such as "dieting" and "obsession with appearance." The origin of the physical and psychological illness a person suffers from is by no means limited to themselves or their family. This film is a journey in the footsteps of the complicated and tangled history that Chaeyoung's body has endured.
