ARTIST'S NOTE

나는 뉴트리아가 가진 혐오성, 괴물쥐와 같은 프레임이 박멸의 명분을 만들어 주고 있는 모습을 발견한다. 오해하고 싶어서 오해하는, 저널리즘이 명시하지 않는 이야기들을 찾아가지만 그 과정에서 ‘박멸을 통한 공존’이라는 모순적인 결론에 맞닿들인다. 뉴트리아는 인간과 이미 공존하기에 박멸하려는 것일까? 아니면 공존할 수 없기에 박멸하려는 것일까? 여기서 나는 ‘박멸과 공존’이라는 이분법에서 벗어나고자 뉴트리아의 1인칭 시점(bodycam)으로 그 동물의 세상을 비춘다.

I discovered that the perception of the nutria as a loathsome creature, framed as a "monster rat," provides the justification for its eradication. In my search for the untold stories that journalism often overlooks, I encountered the contradictory conclusion of "coexistence through eradication." Are we trying to eradicate the nutria because we already coexist with them, or because coexistence is impossible? To move beyond this dichotomy of "eradication and coexistence," I decided to shine a light on the nutria's world from a first-person perspective by equipping one with a body camera.
