ARTIST'S NOTE

이 영화에 대해 글을 쓰는 것은 이상한 일이다. 아마 더 많이 쓰면 그 이유에 조금 더 가까워질 수 있을 것이다. 이 나라를 구하기 위해, 심지어 전쟁에 나가서라도 영웅이 되고 싶어했던 이 남자는 그의 옆에 여자가 없으면 아무것도 아니라고 들었다. 선과 아름다움만을 추구했던 여자가 있었고, 그녀는 심지어 미인 대회에서 우승하기도 했다. 그들이 어떻게 만나서 정반대인 상대와 사랑에 빠졌을까?! 이것은 나의 부모님 이야기다. 하지만 주인공은 나의 이모에 가깝다. 큰이모. 가장 수줍고 상냥한 여인이었던 작은이모가 이 이야기에 영감을 주었다고도 할 수 있다. “나… 나는 이제 자비가 없어.” 그녀는 오늘날 이렇게 말한다! “우리가 두통이 있을 때 약이 없던 시절에는 어떻게 했지? 우리는 일주일에 세 번씩 카펫을 청소했어.” 이 영화는 분명히 이런 대화들에서 영감을 받았다. 표류, 축적, 반복으로 가득한 대화들. 가족 영상을 되돌아보고, 우리 주변 사람들이 눈앞에서 어떻게 현실을 비틀고 재구성하는지 인식하는 데는 몇 년이 걸리는 것 같다. 나는 이 영상을 보면서 더 이상 우리와 함께하지 않는 사람들의 얼굴을 인식하며 느꼈던 감정에 대해 쓸 수도 있다. 많은 사람들이 전쟁에서 죽었다. 몇몇은 미쳤다는 이야기도 들었다. 이 영화가 어떻게 운과 우리가 통제할 수 없는 인생의 일들에 대해 생각하게 만들었는지 쓸 수도 있다. 며칠 전 사촌이 요즘 지진에 대한 걱정으로 마음이 편치 않다고 말했다. 그녀는 젊었을 때 온천을 연구했다. “네가 돌아와서 다행이야. 이 마을의 땅은 지진의 변화가 적어. 적어도 이 점에서는 안전해.” 문제는 힘든 역사를 겪어온 사람들이 항상 자신의 삶을 통제할 수 없다는 느낌을 가지고 있다는 것이다. 그들은 최악의 상황에 대비하는 것을 더 좋아한다. 이는 많은 기다림과 두려움, 그리고 미신을 발생시킨다. 그러나 욕망은 더 강하다. 열정. 그것은 넘쳐흐르며, 그것과 싸우기 위해서라도 더 나아간다. 내게 영화 제작은 우리가 제대로 활용하지 못한 모든 에너지의 원천으로 남아있다. 그래서 우리가 하는 일의 내적 작동 방식을 철저히 설명할 수 없는 것이다.

“It's strange to write about this film. Maybe I could write more and get closer to the why - This man who wanted to save the country, even go to war… be the hero! –was told that the man is nothing without a woman next to him. There was this woman who was all about the good and the beautiful, she even won a beauty contest. How come they met, and fell in love with their opposites?! This is the story of my parents. But the main character is more of my aunt. The older one. I could also write how my younger aunt inspired this story, having been the sweetest, timid woman, I know. “Me… I have no mercy.” she says today! “What have we done about headache, before pills? We cleaned carpets three times a week”. This film is surely inspired by these conversations, full of drifts, accumulation, repetition. It seems like it takes years to look back at the family footages and recognize the ways in which those around us twist and reshape reality right before our eyes. I could write about how I felt watching these footages and recognize faces of those who no longer are with us. Many died in the war. Few I heard had gone mad. I could also write how this film made me think of luck and things happening in our life which we can’t control. The other day my cousin was telling me she has been preoccupied with earthquakes lately. She studied thermal waters in her youth, “Is better you came back. The earth in this town has less changes for earthquake. At least we’re safe on this”. The thing is that having had a harsh history, I feel people back home have always had the feeling they can’t control their lives. They’d rather be prepared for the worst. This generates a lot of waiting, fear… and superstition. But then the desire is stronger. Passion. It overflows and goes beyond, as to fight that. For me, film-making remains a source of all that energy we haven’t properly utilized, that’s how we’re never able to thoroughly explained the inner workings behind what we do.”
