ARTIST'S NOTE

2022년 9월 29일, 대법은 기지촌 미군 위안부 피해자들에게 첫 국가 단위 배상 책임 인정, 판결 선고를 내렸다. 2014년 6월 피해자 120명이 국가를 상대로 소송을 냈지만 일부 취하, 세상을 떠나면서 원고는 95명으로 줄었다. 1인당 배상액은 300-700만원이다. 70년 만에 존재를 인정받은 미군 위안부 여성들을 더 이상 타자화가 아닌 사회의 이야기로 각인하는 과정이 동시대를 살아가는 지금 꼭 필요하다 여긴다. 국가 사업이라는 명분에 기지촌에 동원, 상패동 공동묘지에 묻힐 수밖에 없던 미군 위안부 여성들을 기록하려 한다.

On September 29, 2022, the Supreme Court of South Korea recognised and ruled that the state has the responsibility to compensate the victims of the prostitution on “gijichon” for the first time in history. 120 victims filed a lawsuit against the state in June 2014, but some of them dropped the lawsuit while others had passed away, leaving 95 of them as the plaintiff. I believe it is essential to stop objectifying the Korean comfort women for American soldiers. Instead, we should start to carve the stories of these women, whose existence is finally recognized for the first time in 70 years, into the part of our society right now as we are living in the same era. The film thus documents the traces of the comfort women who had no choice but to be detained to the camp and buried on the cemetery in Sangpae-dong under the name of a national project.
