ARTIST'S NOTE

내가 가장 좋아하는 작업은 아프리카계 흑인들, 자신이 하는 일에 정말 능숙한 흑인들을 촬영하는 것이다. 그들의 재능이 확실히 드러나는 모습을 담고자 한다. 화면 속 인물들은 언제나 시청자보다 똑똑해서, 시청자는 그들을 따라잡아야 한다. 그게 내가 하는 일이다. 나는 피사체가 시청자보다 더 많이 알고 있는 위치에 있도록 설정하는 걸 좋아한다. 그들이 외부와 공유되지 않은 내적 언어로 작동하는 무언가에 몰두해 있을 때, 이런 구도가 가능해진다... 그래서 나는 편집을 통해 갈등을 만들기보다 어떤 상황을 구성하고, 시청자가 그 상황에 직접 관여해야만 하도록 유도한다. 나는 이야기가 아닌 특정한 상황의 조건을 제시하려는 것이다... 나는 그저 예술 작품을 만들고자 한다. 미국 중서부의 노동자 계급 흑인들을 아름다운 이미지로 담아내려 할 뿐이다.

The main thing I like doing is filming people of African descent, black folks, who are really good at what they do, showing talents and stuff like that. The people on screen are always smarter than the viewer, so the viewer has to catch up. That's what I do. I like to position the subject in which they are smarter than the viewer because they are engaged in something that is an internal language.... So I'm not creating a conflict through editing, I'm creating a situation so the viewer has to engage in it.... I am presenting a condition of a situation, not a story.... I'm just trying to make art. I'm just trying to make handsome images of working-class Midwestern black folk.

케빈 제롬 에버슨(1965년 오하이오 주 맨스필드 출생, 현재 버지니아 주 샬로츠빌에 거주 및 근무)은 커먼웰스와 러핀 재단으로부터 임명되어 버지니아 대학교 스튜디오 아트 학과 석좌교수이자 스튜디오 아트 디렉터로 재직중이다. 에버슨의 예술은 판화, 조각, 사진, 그리고 12편의 장편영화와 300편 이상의 공동 및 개인 단편작을 비롯한 영상작품을 아우른다. 구겐하임 펠로우십, 베를린 영화제상, 하인츠 어워드 예술 및 인문학 부문, 알퍼트 어워드 영화/영상 부문 및 로마상을 수여받은 바 있다. 에버슨의 경력을 돌아보게 하는 그의 과거 작품들은 휘트니 미술관, 테이트 모던/필름, 슈타이어마르크 주 그라츠 현대미술관, 서울 국립현대미술관, 브뤼셀 시네마테크에서 상영되었고, 휘트니 비엔날레 (2008, 2012, 2017), 샤르자 비엔날레, 카네기 인터내셔널, 컨투어 비엔날레, 그리고 태국 비엔날레에서도 쇼케이스되었다.

Kevin Jerome Everson (b.1965, Mansfield, Ohio, lives and works in Charlottesville, Virginia) is the Commonwealth and Ruffin Foundation Distinguished Professor of Studio Art and Director of Studio Arts, University of Virginia. Everson's art practice encompasses printmaking, sculpture, photography and film ,including 12 features and more than 300 collaborative and solo shorts. Recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship; Berlin Prize; Heinz Award in Art and Humanities; Alpert Award for Film/Video & Rome Prize, Everson's work has been featured in mid-career retrospectives at the Whitney Museum of American Art; Tate Modern/Film; Halle fur Kunst Steiermark, Graz; Harvard Film Archive; Cinema du Reel/Centre Pompidou; Modern and Contemporary Art Museum, Seoul; Cinematek Brussels and featured at the Whitney Biennial (2008, 2012, 2017), Sharjah Biennial, Carnegie International, Contour Biennial and the Thailand Biennial.
