왜 우리는 발밑의 오물을 들여다보아야 하는가. 사람들은 흔히 발밑의 오물을 외면한다. 하지만 영화는 기피 대상을 인식하지 못하기에 외면 받는 존재나 대상마저 시야 밖으로 밀어내지 않는다. 이미지가 범람하는 시대 속에서 하수도 밑으로 떠내려가 버려진 이미지들을 다시 세상 밖으로 건져내고, 그 안에 생명을 불어넣고 싶었다. 영화는 움직이는 이미지이다. 더 이상 자신을 찾아오지 않으니 스스로 세상 밖으로 나와 자신을 잊은 현실을 영화로 오염시키는 한 괴물에 대한 이야기이자, 기록이자, 에세이이다.
Why must we examine the filth beneath our feet? People usually look away from the dirt below. But cinema, unable to distinguish what ought to be avoided, does not push even the most neglected beings or things out of its frame. In this age overflowing with images, I wanted to reach into the sewers, retrieve the images that had been swept away and forgotten, and breathe new life into them. Cinema is, after all, moving images. This is the story, the record, and the essay of the monster, a creature abandoned and forgotten, that emerges into the world to stain reality with its own cinema, since no one comes looking for it anymore.
DESCRIPTION
1996년 서울, 영화필름의 현상 폐수가 하수도에 버려진다. 폐수로부터 괴물이 깨어나고, 필름 속 수많은 영화는 그의 기억이 된다. 괴물은 사라진 과거를 안고 도심 속을 떠돈다.
판타지아국제영화제에 초청되었던 <체화>(2024) 등 소리를 상실하거나 가질 수 없는 존재들에게 목소리를 부여하는 작업들로 주목 받아 온 홍승기 감독의 신작. 두 명의 퍼포머와 감독 본인이 괴물 슈트를 입고 연기했으며, 비상계엄과 탄핵으로 인해 혼란스럽고 분열되었던 2025년 초의 서울 도심에서 촬영되었다.
Seoul, 1996. Wastewater from developed film reels is dumped into the sewers. From this toxic discharge, a monster awakens, carrying the memories of countless movies imprinted on the film reels. Burdened by a vanished past, the monster wanders the city.
Director HONG Seung Gi, known for giving a voice to those who have lost theirs or were never allowed one, as seen in works like CHAEHWA (2024), which was invited to the Fantasia International Film Festival, presents his latest film. In this film, the director himself, along with two performers, wore the monster suit and took on the role. The film was shot in the heart of Seoul in early 2025, during a time of chaos and division in the aftermath of martial law and the presidential impeachment.

1998년생. 끝없는 자기부정 속에서 발견되는 자기긍정과 자아실현의 아이러니에 주목한다. 목소리를 상실하거나 가질 수 없는 존재들에게 다시금 목소리를 부여하는 작업을 이어오고 있다. 단편영화 <알록달록>(2023), <체화>(2024)를 연출했다. 신작 <몬스트로 옵스큐라>는 혼란스럽고 분열된 2025년 초 서울의 한복판에서 촬영되었다.
Born in 1998, he explores the irony of self-affirmation and self-realization found through endless self-denial. He continues to create films that give a voice to those who have lost theirs or were never allowed one. His short films OVER THE RAINBOW (2023) and CHAEHWA (2024) attracted attention at various film festivals for their unconventional protagonists, unpredictable narratives, and striking visuals within fairytale-like settings. CHAEHWA was invited to the Fantasia International Film Festival. His latest work, Monstro Obscura, was shot in early 2025 in the heart of Seoul, during a time of chaos and division.
