Glocal Short Form/Feature-length Finalists Announcement

 

2025년 제25회 서울국제대안영상예술페스티벌에는 총 1025편(한국신작전 총 579편, 글로컬시네마 총 405편, 뉴미디어 총 41편)의 작품이 출품되었습니다. 2025년 4월 4일부터 5월 16일까지 출품 기간 이후에도 약 6주 동안 모든 출품작을 공정하고 신중하게 심사한 결과, 글로컬 부문에서 단편 14편과 장편 3편이 최종 선정되었습니다. 창의적 비전을 담아 소중한 작품을 출품해주신 모든 작가 여러분께 진심으로 감사의 말씀을 전합니다. 긴 논의 끝에 본선 진출작을 발표하게 되어 매우 기쁘게 생각합니다.

 

선정된 작품들은 오는 2025년 8월 7일부터 13일까지 개최되는 서울국제대안영상예술페스티벌 기간 동안 상영될 예정이며, 상영 이후 최종 수상작이 결정됩니다.

 

아쉽게도 최종 선정에 포함되지 못한 작품들에도 진심 어린 지지와 감사의 마음을 전합니다. 어떤 작품도 가볍게 지나칠 수 없을 만큼 창의성과 비판적 성찰이 담겨 있었습니다. 컨템포러리 대안영화의 정신과 담론을 풍요롭게 해주신 모든 창작자 여러분께 깊은 감사의 인사를 드립니다.

 

For the 2025 Seoul International ALT Cinema & Media Art Festival, a total of 1,025 submissions were received: 579 for Korean Cinema, 405 for the Glocal section, and 41 for the New Media section. Over approximately 6 weeks following the submission period, which ran from April 4 to May 16, 2025, every film was reviewed with the utmost care, impartiality, and thoughtful deliberation. As a result, 14 short films and 3 feature films have been selected for inclusion in the Glocal section. We sincerely thank all the filmmakers who entrusted us with their creative works. After comprehensive discussions and careful consideration, we are pleased to officially announce this year’s finalists.

 

The selected works will be showcased at the Seoul International ALT Cinema & Media Art Festival, where, following their official screenings during the festival period (August 07-13, 2025), the recipients of the final awards will be determined.

 

We also extend sincere gratitude and support to the creators of the many remarkable works that were not included in the final selection. We remain deeply grateful to all the creators whose exceptional works enrich the spirit and discourse of contemporary alternative cinema.

■REVIEW

 

2025년 제25회 서울국제대안영상예술페스티벌(네마프2025)의 글로컬 섹션에서는 실험영화, 극영화, 다큐멘터리, 미디어 아트, 애니메이션 등 다양한 장르에서 총 405편의 신작이 출품되었습니다. 이 작품들은 각기 다른 문화적 맥락 속에서 제작되었으며, 디아스포라 정체성, 정치적 경험, 생태적 상상력, 기억과 시간 탐구 등 동시대의 핵심 주제를 집중적으로 다루고 있습니다.

 

선정 과정은 결코 간단하지 않았습니다. 뛰어난 완성도와 다양한 형식의 실험을 통해 영화적 언어가 융합된 최고의 영화들을 심사할 수 있었습니다. 최종 선정된 작품들은 홍콩 민주화 시위, 이란 신화적 풍경, 팔레스타인 디아스포라 저항 서사, 아르헨티나 동물원 노동자, 동물과 자연의 삶, 스페인 트라문타나 산맥의 감각적 초상을 통해 인간 존재의 복잡성과 균열을 깊이 탐구하고 있습니다. 이들 영화는 16mm 필름부터 애니메이션과 실사 이미지의 하이브리드 구성에 이르기까지 다층적인 시청각 언어를 활용하였습니다. 일부 작품은 전통적인 이야기 구조를 해체하고 비선형적 구성에 도전하며, 다른 작품들은 음악적 리듬을 영화적 감각으로 변환하는 실험을 보여줍니다. 이러한 시도들은 감각을 재구성하고 시각적 성찰을 유도하는 새로운 영화적 공간을 열어주었습니다.

 

올해 글로컬 섹션은 최종적으로 14편의 단편과 3편의 장편이 선정되었습니다. ‘글로컬 시네마’가 단순한 지리적 혼종성을 넘어서 지역적 경험과 세계적 서사가 만나는 지점을 탐구한다는 점에서, 시네마가 여전히 세계를 성찰하고 재구성할 수 있는 힘을 지닌 매체임을 다시 확인시켜주는 영화들임을 확신합니다. 이들 작품은 세 개의 단편 섹션과 두 편의 장편 상영으로 구성되며, 관객들과의 깊이 있는 만남을 기대하고 있습니다. 이번 여름, 이 작품들이 우리 시대의 긴급한 가치를 놓고 관객들과 의미 있는 대화를 나눌 수 있는 장이 되기를 기대합니다.

 

At the 25th Seoul International. ALT ciNema MediArt Festival year 2025, the Glocal Section received a total of 405 new works across diverse genres, including experimental film, fiction, documentary, media art, and animation. These works, created within various cultural contexts, closely examine contemporary themes such as diasporic identity, political experience, ecological imagination, and explorations of memory and time.

 

The selection process was by no means simple. We had the privilege of reviewing some of the finest films, marked by outstanding craftsmanship and a wide range of formal experimentation that fused into rich cinematic languages. The final selections delve deeply into the complexities and fractures of human existence through subjects such as the Hong Kong pro-democracy protests, Iran’s mythic landscapes, narratives of resistance within the Palestinian diaspora, zookeepers in Argentina, the intertwined lives of animals and nature, and sensory portraits of the Tramuntana Mountains in Spain. These works employ multi-layered audiovisual languages, ranging from 16mm film to hybrid constructions combining animation and live-action footage. Some deconstruct traditional narrative frameworks and experiment with non-linear structures, while others translate musical rhythm into cinematic sensation. Such approaches open new cinematic spaces that reconfigure sensory perception and prompt visual reflection.

 

This year, the Glocal Section has selected fourteen short films and two feature-length films. These works reaffirm the belief that cinema remains a powerful medium capable of reflecting on and reimagining the world, as they explore the intersection where local experiences and global narratives converge- going beyond mere geographic hybridity. The program will be presented in three short film sections and two feature film screenings, offering audiences opportunities for deep engagement. We look forward to these films becoming a space for meaningful dialogue with viewers this summer, as they confront the urgent values of our time.

세계적으로 가속화되는 극우화 경향과 전쟁의 위협, 멈추지 않는 인간중심적 환경 개발이라는 작금의 현실 속에서, 올해 글로컬 부문 출품작들은 ‘나와 다른 존재들과 세계를 어떻게 함께 살아갈 수 있을지’를 질문하며 공생의 윤리를 진지하게 모색하고 있었습니다. 많은 창작자들은 동시대가 마주한 문제들을 단순히 작품의 주제로 소비하는 데 그치지 않고, 불안정한 시대 속에서 과거의 사건을 반추하고 재구성함으로써 변화와 치유의 가능성으로 나아가고자 하는 희망을 보여줬습니다.

 

본선에 진출한 작품들은 이러한 시대정신을 다양한 형식적 실험과 시도를 통해 다층적인 감각을 형성한 작품들입니다. 매체적으로도 폭넓은 기술적 형식을 혼용해 급변하는 이미지 구성 환경 속에서 파수꾼이자 개척자로서의 역할을 수행하는 작품들로 선정했습니다.

 

올여름, 우리 시대의 가치를 진지하게 고민한 작품들이 관객과 만나 의미 있는 대화를 나누길 기대합니다. 아쉽게 본선에 진출하지 못한 작품들의 치열한 사유와 실험에도 깊은 감사와 존중을 표합니다.

 

In today's world, characterized by the rapid rise of far-right ideologies, the looming threat of war, and ongoing anthropocentric environmental development, this year's Glocal submissions have thoughtfully explored the question: "How can we coexist with beings different from ourselves and the world around us?" These works engage deeply with the ethics of coexistence. Many creators have not only addressed contemporary issues but also reflected on and reinterpreted past events, revealing a hope for transformation and healing during these unstable times.

 

The finalists embody this spirit through multilayered sensory experiences and diverse formal experiments. Technically and aesthetically, they utilize a wide range of media formats, serving as both guardians and pioneers within a rapidly evolving landscape of image-making.

 

This summer, we hope these works-which sincerely reflect the values of our era-will ignite meaningful dialogue with audiences. We also extend our heartfelt respect and gratitude to the creators whose bold reflections and experiments, though not selected for the final program, have made a lasting impression.

혼란과 균열의 시간 속에서 올해 글로컬 섹션에 소개된 영화들은 중요한 질문을 던집니다. 우리가 이렇게 불확실한 세계에서 서로를 바라보고 마주하면서 함께 살아갈 수 있을까요? 창작자들은 단순한 재현을 넘어서 영화라는 매체의 언어를 실험하며 그 답을 찾아가고 있습니다.

 

올해 최종 본선에 진출하는 작품들은 선형적 또는 비선형적 서사, 기억과 시간, 감각과 리듬, 이미지와 소리의 경계를 넘나듭니다. 어떤 작품은 아득한 과거의 상처를 불러와 현재의 위태로운 순간과 겹쳐놓고, 또 다른 작품은 동물, 식물, 비인간 생명체들과의 관계를 새롭게 생각하며 공존의 윤리를 탐구합니다. 이러한 시도들은 세계를 이해하는 기존의 틀을 비틀고, 낯선 감각의 층위를 열어 우리를 새로운 시각적 사유의 공간으로 이끌어냅니다.

 

이 영화들은 거창한 해답을 제시하지 않습니다. 오히려 균열 속에 숨겨진 목소리들을 조용히 드러내고, 관객의 내면에서 반향을 일으킬 여백을 남깁니다. 그 여백 속에서 우리는 스스로에게 묻습니다. ‘복잡한 세계에서 우리는 어떻게 존재하며, 무엇을 함께 기억하고 상상할 것인가?’

 

올여름 이 작품들이 관객들과의 만남을 통해 또 다른 사유와 감각의 파장을 만들어가길 기대합니다.

 

In this time of confusion and upheaval, the films featured in this year’s Glocal section raise important questions: Can we truly see and engage with one another, and can we live together in such an uncertain world? The creators go beyond simple representation, experimenting with the very language of cinema in search of answers.

 

This year’s final selection of films traverses the boundaries of linear and non-linear narratives, memory and time, sensation and rhythm, as well as image and sound. Some revisit the wounds of a distant past, layering them onto fragile moments of the present, while others investigate new ways of relating to animals, plants, and non-human life forms, delving into the ethics of coexistence. Through these efforts, they challenge conventional frameworks for understanding the world and open up unfamiliar layers of perception, guiding us into new realms of visual contemplation.

 

These films do not provide grand solutions. Instead, they quietly unveil voices hidden within the fractures, allowing space for echoes to resonate in each viewer. In that space, we are invited to reflect on this complex world, considering how we exist and what we choose to remember and imagine together.

 

This summer, we hope these works will inspire new waves of thought and emotion as they connect with audiences.
