Bioscope, Anatomy of the Matter

<바이오스코프, 물질의 아나토미>는 새로운 신체와 물질의 풍경을 여섯 편의 필름으로 탐색하는 시도이다. 진단과 연구를 위해 물리적 기계 장치로 포착되는 (생)물/질의 시각화가 실험실 바깥에서 이미지로서 등장할 때, 이는 필연적 독해를 요구하는 의학 및 과학 데이터와는 다른 목적을 지니게 된다. 하이테크놀로지를 경유하여 신체와 물질을 투과해 우리 앞에 놓인 이 이미지들은 “숫자(데이터)”와 “그림값(이미지)”이 공존하는 것으로, 객관성을 담보하는 특권적 이미지가 되어 대상을 투명하고 알기 쉬운 것으로 재현한다고 가정된다. 그렇다면, 우리는 이 실험실 바깥의 데이터-이미지를 독해할 수 있는가? 인간의 개입 없는 순수한 기계가 공정한 진실을 제공한다는 관행으로부터 ‘바이오스코프’는 인간적 시각중심주의를 넘어서는 탈-인간중심주의적인 동시에 지극히 인간중심주의적인 이중적 이미지로 스크린에 현현한다. 동물, 암석, 기관, 환경, 노동, 신체를 가로지르는 다양한 해부학 이미지를 살펴봄으로써, 대상을 해부해 광범위한 규율 대상으로 만드는 이미지가 어떻게 그것으로부터 탈주하는지 혹은 포섭되는지를 고찰해 보고자 한다.
"Bioscope: Anatomy of the Matter" is an attempt to explore new scopes of bodies and materials through six films. When the visualization of (bio)material, captured by physical mechanical apparatus for diagnosis and research, appears as images outside the laboratory, it serves a purpose different from the inevitable interpretation required by medical and scientific data. These images, which penetrate bodies and materials via high technology, are presented to us as coexisting "numbers (data)" and "image values (images)." They are assumed to be privileged images that ensure objectivity and represent the subject as transparent and understandable. So, we interpret these data-images outside the laboratory? The 'Bioscope' manifests on the screen as a dual image that is both post-anthropocentric, transcending human-centric optimistic, and profoundly anthropocentric, challenging the convention that a pure machine without human intervention provides an unbiased truth. By examining various anatomical images traversing animals, rocks, organs, environments, labor, and bodies, we aim to consider how the image that dissects and transforms the agency into a wide-ranging disciplinary target either escapes from or gets subsumed by it.
